The synovial chondromatosis of the joints, of the tendon sheets and bursas is represented by the formation of cartilage nodules which can udergo calcification or ossification or both processes. It is generally accepted that this disease is due to metaplasia of subsynovial connective tissue. In this work we analyzed by a multidisciplinary approach the transformation of the cartilage nodules, the morphological modifications and the relationship between the organic and inorganic component of the cartilage nodules of the chondromatoic joints. The principal morphological characteristics of the nodules are represented by the presence of connective tissue, fibrous cartilage or calcified cartilage, as well as of trabecular or compact bone. The presence of these three tissue types varies in the different zones giving rise to a variable morphology, which is the principal characteristic of the free nodules.
