Heavy fuel oils, used as heating oils in thermal power plants, are known to contain a wide range of organic compounds; among these, the volatile monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons receive particular attention, since they are potentially carcinogenic. Here, a methodology for the determination of these hazardous compounds in a complex matrix, such as heavy fuel oil, is described. Such a methodology makes use of headspace solid-phase micro-extraction as a pre-analytical technique, followed by gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis. For quantitative purposes, internal standard solutions were prepared using deuterated BTEX solubilized in white mineral oil. Actual samples analyses are also reported.
