In these few lessons we introduce some of the basic tools needed to develop models of mechanical systems; we have no ambition of generality, and focus instead on the the modeling of the attenuation elements used in interferometers. Because of their function, they present some peculiarities, which make their simulation different from the usual engineering applications of structural analysis, and require ad-hoc solutions, which we try to present in a self contained manner.
