The paper discusses a particular typology of tiles: the azulejos. The discussion starts from their origin that can be considered as a discontinuous process before settling itself into a sort of mass production. The development of the majolica technique have been crucial for the expansion of the azulejos. Their use in architectural contexts assumes, in Portugal, a monumental role and expresses the originality of individual property. The enormous quantity of azulejos represents a vast and significant heritage. Nowadays, this heritage should, however, also brings with the very complex problem of its proper conservation and the knowledge of the constitutive materials.
