The paper discusses a particular iconographical motif that is attested in the repertory of the Roman plaster relieves and wall-paintings. The motif represents a circular building without roof, having garlands on its external walls and various sacral elements in its interior space (e.g. statue on column or pillar, three, bethylus etc.). Even if the relationship between imagines and realia poses many controversial questions, the motif seems to be not a merely iconographical invention, but a reflection of an architectural form that was known in antiquity like show two little sanctuaries in the Cyrene agora.

Abstract

The paper discusses a particular iconographical motif that is attested in the repertory of the Roman plaster relieves and wall-paintings. The motif represents a circular building without roof, having garlands on its external walls and various sacral elements in its interior space (e.g. statue on column or pillar, three, bethylus etc.). Even if the relationship between imagines and realia poses many controversial questions, the motif seems to be not a merely iconographical invention, but a reflection of an architectural form that was known in antiquity like show two little sanctuaries in the Cyrene agora.
