This paper discusses internet discussion boards (forums) as one of the central forms of Web 2.0 communication. It gives an overview of the main characteristics of boards in the context of internet based forms of communication and outlines main topics of linguistic interest in their academic analysis and discussion. The text examines some german boards focussing in particular on their structure and the particular context of communication. It argues that in terms of linguistic forms boards are more conventional than chats or other forms of web-based communication and therefore concentrates the academic discussion on sociolinguistic and pragmatic aspects like the use of spoken and written language varieties or forms of dialogue, including relationship management and forms of politeness.
