This paper presents the results of a study concerning the definition of the problematic relationship between individuals and society mediated by technology. It is the result of an empirical research based on Niklas Luhmann’s theory of social systems; its general objective is to outline the modalities through which society observes individuals and defines, also by means of communication, the forms of life, also seen in its biological complexity. It is therefore an analysis carried out within the so-called society semantics which takes place within the system of mass media, in the communications which make up its operational network and in its observations. The specific subject of investigation through which the individualsociety relationship was explored derives from observations of the media system in respect of an event which is particularly related to the definition of life and person status: the debate on euthanasia following the Terri Schiavo case in the United States.
