Abstract

The main topic of the Phd-thesis Lentius, suavius, profundius: pensiero ed ecologia di Alexander Langer is the ecological idea of Alexander Langer. A particular attention is also given to the reconstruction of the peculiar connections between Langer's ecological engagement and his non violent beliefs. Langer was an italian (german mother tongue) journalist, teacher, thinker and politician. Involved in the inter-ethnic movement in South Tyrol, Langer was also active in the catholic dissent in the late 60's. After the break with the official church he joined the left extraparliamentar organization Lotta continua. Some years after its disbandment Langer got elected in the South Tyrol Provincial Council with a small alternative list. In the early 80's Langer adhered to the ecological sensibility coming from Germany and in particular from the relationships he had established with the German Greens. Langer co-founded the Italian Greens with whom he got elected in the European Parliament in the years 1989 and 1994. As member of the European Parliament Langer made his best in the attempt to stop the escalating violence in the jugoslavian wars. In 1995 he committed suicide in Florence on the 3rd of July.
