Magnesium is the fourt mohst common cation in the human body and the second intracellular cation after potassium. It is involved, as a cofactor, in many important enzymatic reactions and fulfils numerous intracellular physiological functions. Studies suggest that the deficiency of magnesium is strictly related to metabolic sindrome expression. The present research investigated for the first time about the intracellular levels of magnesium using a Enviromental Scanning Electrone Microscope, equipped with an Energy Dispersion Spectrometer. The results demonstrated that the transdermal absorption of magnesium is a good and safe way to vehicolate that cation, opening the way for a clinical evaluation of its therapeutical potential in patient with low intracellular magnesium levels and multiple metabolic risk factors.
