Abstract

The role of urban nature offers a central perspective in order to understand identity and imaginary of contemporary cities. We wonder how the new urban nature images and practices are intertwined with the new scenery of digital and smart city. In the frame of a participative and inclusive vision of the new digital city, digital mapping of urban nature can be the site of connection between institutions and citizens, as well as between public policies and innovative practices. In this framework, what kind of tensions need to be explored between social practices and institutional powers? What role could institutions play in order to promote urban inclusion by legitimizing these self-guiding society expressions? On the basis of a comparison between the interactive maps, data and websites related to urban green in New York City, leader in the practice of urban agriculture, and in Italy, the paper analyses the potential role of urban agriculture in remapping the city of Bologna and creating new urban visions.
