After a survey of Heywoodian studies, the article investigates the wealth of allusions the text contains to the courtly life of Henry VIII at a time - about 1530-33 - when the king was on the point of divorcing. The essays also analyses how The Play of the Wether contains aspects of social satire through the presentation of characters who belong to various and opposite social classes (e.g. the Gentlewoman and the Laundress). The performance held at Hampton Court in 2009 is taken into account as well.
