Compliments can be understood as a prototypical realization of polite actions. The contribution tries to point out the principal rules and characteristics of compliments as speech acts. It discusses the purposes of speakers that give compliments to others and shows how these speech acts are integrated in and linked to larger strings of verbal exchanges. Finally it focusses on the relation between compliments and politeness and tries to draw some conclusion for politeness theory.
