The aim of the research was to understand how the Roma who live in Italian and Roman “nomad camps”, with a specific reference to a group of Bosnian Roma who dwell in a settlement located in Rome, conceive, plan, practice and promote their own “integration”. The gap between these people’s own idea of “integration” along with the policies and projects adopted for them by the institutions was also explored. The study (interpretative paradigm) made use of the main qualitative research techniques (document analysis, semi-structured interviews, ethnographic research). It entailed a general part, examining the phenomenon at the Italian level, and a case study carried out in Rome. As for the analysis of the phenomenon at the Italian level, laws, policies and projects adopted for these people by Italian institutions were examined. Semi-structured qualitative interviews to Roma and non-Roma privileged observers belonging both to institutions as well as academic and no profit field were also conducted. The case study carried out in Rome involved institutional analysis, semi-structured interviews with privileged observers, and a period of ethnographic research (including observant participation). The latter was conducted among Roma of Bosnian origin living in “Salviati 2”, a “nomad camp” located in Rome’s eastern periphery.
