The present collection of essays is the result of a workshop held on 22-23 March 2018 and co-organized by the “Mediterranean Work Group” of the Hitotsubashi University and the University of Urbino Carlo Bo. Japanese and Italian researchers dealt with a wide range of arguments, such as ancient and modern history as well as international relations. As research on the Mediterranean and its “interconnections” is becoming increasingly important, this joint reflection on the Mediterranean Sea as a crucible of cultures appears timely. Abstract

Furthermore, the perspective is often unprecedented, since the history of the Mediterranean, the beating heart of the West, is investigated from the observation point of the Far East.
