This contribution is an extract from a thesis developed at the Conservation and Restoration School of the Urbino University Carlo Bo in which I tried to study problems and potential solutions in the restoration of an artwork of religious art. Starting point of the study was a wooden artwork representing a polychrome Crucifix dated XVII century, unknown author, taken from Eremo di Monte Giove, near Fano (PU), property of the “Casa Gentilizia Congregazione Eremiti Camaldolesi” in Tuscany. The artwork was in such a poor conservation condition that the fruition of the image was heavily altered, with a long crack in the chest, holes made by woodworm, galleries, loss of the gold gouache of the loincloth, loss of the pictorial film and the original arms. It required some consideration over the choice of the final aesthetic presentation, a particularly complex phase for an artwork which needed to come back to its original place and with the final goal to be an object of worship for the whole community.
