“If you want to overcome the whole world, overcome yourself.” The sources of a recurrent aphorism in the late works of Dostoyevsky Among the stylistic tools adopted by Dostoyevsky to disseminate the values he considered crucial for the moral revival of the Russian society among his contemporaries, the use of the aphorism should be noted. This work investigates on the origin of the maxim “If you want to overcome the whole world, overcome yourself”, recurrent either literally or with variations in the literary and journalistic texts of the Russian author in his latter days.

Abstract

“If you want to overcome the whole world, overcome yourself.” The sources of a recurrent aphorism in the late works of Dostoyevsky Among the stylistic tools adopted by Dostoyevsky to disseminate the values he considered crucial for the moral revival of the Russian society among his contemporaries, the use of the aphorism should be noted.
