Abstract

The year 1996 represented a turning point for the Lega Nord and its political strategy. The Lega definitively changed character, transforming itself from an versatile and heterogeneous political actor, a “great chameleon” as Giovanni Pajetta described it,¹ into one with a project so specific and distinctive as to make any kind of political mediation difficult: “secession” and the creation of an independent state in northern Italy. This change in character came about and was reinforced in two stages which created very different climates of public opinion.
