This article examines the historical figure of Giovan Francesco Passionei both in the context of his complex familial setting, and within the more general ecclesiastical history of the seventeenth century. This study has been carried out in the light of new investigations conducted in the archives of Cagli, Fossombrone and Pesaro, and highlights his singular work, serving first as Bishop of Cagli and apostolic nuncio in Tuscany, then as prelate in Pesaro.
