Cinema is linked to the afterlife because from the very beginning it has been a powerful metaphor for it. Indeed, writers and directors have often perceived the dark cinema hall as a symbol of the world of the dead, and in fact the characters projected on the screen recall the literary image of the deceased in the Underworld. What is more, the cinema has also narrated the catabasis. Concerning this aspect, this paper examines two examples: a fantasy/peplum from the 1920s, Maciste all’inferno, and Lars von Trier’s recent psychological thriller The House That Jack Built.

Abstract

Cinema is linked to the afterlife because from the very beginning it has been a powerful metaphor for it. Indeed, writers and directors have often perceived the dark cinema hall as a symbol of the world of the dead, and in fact the characters projected on the screen recall the literary image of the deceased in the Underworld. What is more, the cinema has also narrated the catabasis. Concerning this aspect, this paper examines two examples: a fantasy/peplum from the 1920s, Maciste all’inferno, and Lars von Trier’s recent psychological thriller The House That Jack Built.
