Abstract

The Three-figured marble reliefs are an archaeological puzzle for decades: if they are derived from an Attic monument built in the last quarter of the 5th century BC or Roman productions. Accepting the hypothesis of their creation in Athens, the series with Herakles, Peirithoös and Theseus, which has a literary equivalent in the contemporary Attic tragedies, represents the moment full of pathos of the separation between the three heroes and the punishment of the only Peirithoös forced to remain alive in Hades.
