The placement of Herbart within the development of the most recent philosophy represented a challenge for Hegel's disciples interested in the history of their discipline, since the had kept quiet about that antagonist in his writings and in his lecture courses. Gabler, Hinrichs, Michelet, Rosenkranz and Erdmann have tried their hand at the enterprise in various ways and have obtained conflicting results. It thus happened that Herbart remained for the first two a philosopher of reflection, in the manner of Kant and Fichte, that Michelet classified him among the immediate followers of Kant as the academic successor of Schulze, that Rosenkranz outlined him as a philosopher of objectivity in antithesis to Fichtian subjectivism, where only Erdmann has shown to recognize him as the author of a system of thought potentially alternative to that of Hegel.
