The aim of this paper is to analyse the cantica of Euripides’ Andromache paying attention to the diπerent ways of choral mediation. The choir tries to mediate in the conflict between Andromache and Hermione, both victims of an anomalous conjugal situation caused by Neoptolemus inside the oikos. Furthermore, the choir mediates between the present and the past, linking the sad events of Pthia with the Trojan war. It is precisely the war, whose suπerings unite winners and losers, that seems to be the unifying theme of a tragedy often accused of lacking a structural unity. Finally, the singers mediate between diπerent poetic genres, when they sing an epinikion in honour of Peleo, shortly before the sad news of Neptolemous’s death is unleashed upon the old hero. Through the analysis of the cantica and, in particular, of the diπerent typologies of choral mediation, is possible to obtain a deeper interpretation of the tragedy.
