Major changes in institutions, religion and law were brought to light and others were put in place due to the interactions between Ambrosius, bishop of Milan, and his contemporary emperors, especially Theodosius I. The independence of the Church, the political role of the bishop, the hierarchical order of the divine and the imperial law, the preeminence of religious leaders over the imperial power, the resacralization of the Roman empire under Christian banners are the main themes debated in this paper.
