The chapter provides a detailed overview of Italian research on the history of the family from the late Middle Ages to the 19th century carried out from the 1970s to the present day, providing the reader with some information also on earlier studies as well as on the characteristics of the families in the 20th and 21st centuries. The survey also takes into account women's and gender history, as well as LGBTQ+ history, as both have contributed greatly to our knowledge of the characteristics of the families in the past.
