The paper discusses briefly on stone presented in 36 Book Pliny’s Naturalis Historia in terms of a series of opposition between nature and worked material. Pliny emphasises the qualities of firmitas (endurance) and utilitas (workability) of the stone, suggesting its economic value, functional durability, and social meaning in Roman society. Its use in the monuments, long lasting over time, envisages a possible correlation between value/stone and effect/memory according to the aesthetic and semantic expectations of the fruiters.

Abstract
The paper discusses briefly on stone presented in 36 Book Pliny’s Naturalis Historia in terms of a series of opposition between nature and worked material. Pliny emphasises the qualities of firmitas (endurance) and utilitas (workability) of the stone, suggesting its economic value, functional durability, and social meaning in Roman society. Its use in the monuments, long lasting over time, envisages a possible correlation between value/stone and effect/memory according to the aesthetic and semantic expectations of the fruiters.File in questo prodotto:
