Numerous scholars have addressed the subject of Etruscan theatre, but almost always with treatises that deal with specific aspects rather than with a general view. The literature devoted to the theme of the Phersu - the masked character depicted on vases and in some tomb paintings especially from Tarquinia - is especially vast. Interest also stems from the hypothesis of various scholars around the passage of the Etruscan term phersu through the form phersu-na, to persona, or ‘mask’ in Latin. Since no written works of a theatrical character referable to Etruscan authors have survived to this day, only indirect sources - in particular Greek or Roman historical and literary sources or archaeological evidence relating to stage sets and performances of a theatrical character - are available for any idea of the matter .

Abstract
Numerous scholars have addressed the subject of Etruscan theatre, but almost always with treatises that deal with specific aspects rather than with a general view. The literature devoted to the theme of the Phersu - the masked character depicted on vases and in some tomb paintings especially from Tarquinia - is especially vast. Interest also stems from the hypothesis of various scholars around the passage of the Etruscan term phersu through the form phersu-na, to persona, or ‘mask’ in Latin. Since no written works of a theatrical character referable to Etruscan authors have survived to this day, only indirect sources - in particular Greek or Roman historical and literary sources or archaeological evidence relating to stage sets and performances of a theatrical character - are available for any idea of the matter .I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
