The research presented here was conducted within an Innovative Doctorate project financed by the Marche Region, entitled “Communication and conservation. New digital models in the professional field in the cultural heritage supply chain". Starting from this assumption, this research could better be defined as a "theoretical-practical reflection on the relevance and accessibility of cultural heritage in the contemporary world, starting from conservation processes", as it delves into the theme of communication, mainly to the non-expert public, of the data produced during a restoration intervention and, consequently, of the professional figure of the contemporary restorer. The aim of the research is to provide the conservator-restorer who operates in the digital age, thanks to the contribution of Digital Humanities in the technical-scientific field of reference, new tools and a standardized workflow proposal for translating the technical data from restoration laboratories into narratives to create a new entry-point on the artistic and conservation history of a cultural object. To do this, the study presented is divided into various analytical-experimental moments, to outline not only contextual information and current resources for the profession, but also fields of action and practical guidelines for digital and analogue communication of conservation data. A first part is dedicated to the professional figure of the restorer and the environment in which he works: the tools of cultural analysis are used to highlight how the figure of the restorer is represented within the Italian media and museum context, and subsequently a scientific review is performed regarding the current role of the restorer within the academic debate on Digital Cultural Heritage. Given these premises, useful for better framing the research context, a second part aims to "lay the foundations" for a contemporary communication strategy for the conservation and restoration of Cultural Heritage, reflecting on the theoretical and technological resources available, based on the need to create a connection between the moment of scientific documentation and that of scientific communication, and on the digital transition processes already underway at a national level. Finally, the third part, purely experimental, identifies some communication development trajectories with respect to the themes of conservation and restoration: it analyzes the case study of the Open Restoration multi-channel digital platform, born within this research project to tell the public the interventions of the School of Conservation and Restoration of the University of Urbino, and all the digital and physical events developed so far, up to the "participative conservation" projects tested locally, with the murals of the city of Pesaro, and internationally, with post-emergency experiments on the Lebanese territory. At the end of this review, a new design approach for the communication of conservation processes will be outlined, taking into account future training and professional needs. The research highlights how the data coming from conservation and restoration interventions on cultural objects of various kinds, far from being only of interest to professionals, possess intrinsic narrative potential capable of creating a new social awareness with respect to the theme of conservation for cultural heritage and the role of the contemporary conservator-restorer.
