The contribution focusses on politeness in teaching programs for German as a Foreign Language. It gives a critical overview over existing teaching strategies and discusses what is needed in order to integrate reflections on politeness in a general concept communicative competences and exercises that aim to foster those competences. Therefore, it tries to explore the relationship between politeness and communication, distinguishes between first-order- and second-order-politeness and shapes some basic strategies for teaching programs that would allow a broader and deeper understanding of the function and the use of politeness in communication.
