In light of René Girard’s works (especially Des choses cachées depuis la fondation du monde, 1978), the paper discusses some elements concerning religion, politics, and law that emerged in the context of the Roman Empire but relevant in the history of political and religious institutions in medieval and modern Europe. Attention will be focused on pagan and Christian sacrifices in their relationship with the political dimension, which both have contributed to establish and consolidate.
