This article retraces the phases of the discovery and study of the Marzamemi wreck, which sank in the waters off Capo Passero in the first half of the 6th century while carrying a load of marble for a Christian basilica; analysis of the data collected in the first Kapitän’s excavation campaigns in the 1960s, and the more recent ones carried out by Leidwanger in the 2010s, will bring to an assessment of the working procedures followed by the byzantine marmorarii and of the intended destination of the cargo.
