The Three-Figure Reliefs, organically related to one another, are known only trough Roman copies. However, stylistic and formal considerations indicate that the prototypes were sculpted in Athens in the late fifth century B.C. The subjects reflect political and religious attitudes, claiming a collective identity expressed in the link between myth and reality. The common themes of death and afterlife suggest that these slabs were made as sculptural decoration for a public memorial. The marble copies, carved in the Augustan period and displayed at Rome in public contexts, show the how Roman culture appropriated these subjects. I consider them to reflect the expectations kindled by the new saeculm aureum of Roman society.

Abstract
The Three-Figure Reliefs, organically related to one another, are known only trough Roman copies. However, stylistic and formal considerations indicate that the prototypes were sculpted in Athens in the late fifth century B.C. The subjects reflect political and religious attitudes, claiming a collective identity expressed in the link between myth and reality. The common themes of death and afterlife suggest that these slabs were made as sculptural decoration for a public memorial. The marble copies, carved in the Augustan period and displayed at Rome in public contexts, show the how Roman culture appropriated these subjects. I consider them to reflect the expectations kindled by the new saeculm aureum of Roman society.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
