The authors review the results (achieved and failed) from the different areas of psychotherapy research: from outcome research to process research to process-outcome research. Confronting the two main movements (Empirically Supported Treatments, EST e Empirically Supported Relationships, ESR) of the contemporary debate on treatments validation, the authors propose their reflection about two crucial aspects: the object of the empirical investigation (intervention techniques, therapeutic relationship, the personal aspects of the therapist ecc) and the methodology of research (i.e., single case vs Randomized Clinical Trials, RCT). In conclusion, following an integrative approach, they propose eight strategies to deepen empirical research and bridge the gap between empirical investigation and clinical practice. Abstract
