The paper concerns the most significant phases of the Italian archaeological research in Libya, especially in the Cyrenaica region, during the first half of the XX century. In 1912 definitively Italy annexed Tripolitania and Cyrenaica in the context of the politic-economic partition of Mediterranean by the European governments. Time after time the Libyan antiquities, especially the Roman ones, became an important media for legitimating the choices of the colonialist policy, before during the governments leaded by Giolitti (1901-14) and later during the leadership of Mussolini (1922-43). The 1930’s testifies to a politicized use and abuse of the antiquities in accord with the myth of the new Roman Empire. These events are well-documented by the statue known as Venus of Cyrene.

Abstract
These events are well-documented by the statue known as Venus of Cyrene.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
