The reconstruction of the recent history of the landscape provides a base of knowledge for predict modification in short term and planning future landscape management. The changes over the last 50 years within the Rimini Municipality landscape were assessed by comparing 3 maps of land uses (1955, 1976, 2003) derived from the interpretation of aerial photographs and satellite images. Rimini landscape has changed because both, the urban sprawling and different agricultural methods, which led to almost completely disappearence of heterogeneous agricultural areas. In particular, the period 1955-1976 was subject mainly to “soil consumption” as a consequence of urbanization and changes in cultivation techniques. Urbanization and land use change decrease both quantity and quality of available resources (e.g. soil, water) modifying the possibilities to providing Ecosystem Services.
