In 1949 the former US Secretary of State J. Forrestal died falling from the sixteenth floor of the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, where he was hospitalized for a nervous breakdown. In his room the unfinished transcription of the translation of a chorus of Sophocles' Ajax was found, which was immediately interpreted as a suicide note. The essay considers the fortune of this episode in the press of the time and in some recent plays.
