A eytogenetic study was carried aut on the chromosomes and the nuclear DNA contents of a Nonh-Westcm MediteITanean population of tbe common sole, Solea solea (Pisces, Pleuronectiformes, Soleidae). Tbe chromosomes were studied using Giemsa-staining, C-banding, silver-staining and fluorescent in situ hybridization with 288 cON A and 5S rDNA probes. Tbe karyotype consisted of 9 bi·armed (m, sm and st) and 12 mono-anned cbromosome pairs (20=42, NF=SS). Heterochromatin blocks were located in tbe pericentromeric region of almost a11 of the chromosomes and along the entire short-arm of one sm-st pair, corresponding te the NOR site. The NORs showed size variation at individuallevel. Major (28S) and minor (55) rONA genes were located on different chromosome pairs. The diploid (2e) nuclear DNA content was 1.48±O.03 pg and the AT DNA corresponded to 59. 22 % or the whole genorne.
