The ancient representations of Arachne punished by Athena are rare against the fortune enjoyed by the myth in modern times, mostly depending from the Ovidian source. In this contest special focus takes the scene carved on the frieze of the Forum Transitorium. This is the only extant depiction of the theme in Roman State art. Its meaning is connected with other ritual and mythical events sculpt in the entablatures of the monument.
