Abstract

In Pesaro there are some ancient Greek marbles belonged to Caroline of Brunswick, wife of George Prince of Wales. The princess had got these marbles during her travel in the Mediterranean sea. In May 1816 Caroline was in Athens, where she was visiting the city with Louis Fauvel which advised the princess to purchase the antiquities. The marbles selected by Caroline, mostly inscriptions, gravestones and Attic votive reliefs, prove the classical style impact in European taste and they are significant witnesses of the academic discussion on Greek Art at the beginning of XIXth Century.
