Abstract

On February 2011, Claudia Vago, a fast grown Italian “Twitter personality” without any previous experience in journalism, was funded by the crowd online to cover, from the field, the Occupy movement. Her story represents an interesting case to investigate the ongoing process of re-negotiation of statuses and balances of power involving the whole of the Italian online information ecosystem. Analyzing the “readings” of Claudia Vago’s initiative by journalists, different online communities and crowdfunders, the article aims to discuss how all these actors were competing over the authority and power to define legitimate roles, values, practices within the system. The point in fact isn’t the end of the monopoly over credibility for professional journalists anymore. On the contrary other -by now well-established- pro-am figures like bloggers, citizen journalists and web activists seem to be challenged by new actors, hybrids of other hybrids. The authority developed by these newcomers over social media in fact can be capitalized and spent on different territories, apparently without disorienting their supporters.
