This review article focuses on the relationship between language and language use on one hand and the concept of generation on the other. It argues that linguistic concepts and methods can be very useful for a deeper understanding of differences between generations, the process of constitution of generations and the creation of generation identities. Generations are seen as the product of communication and of discoursive activities. Among the distinctive features of generations there are many linguistic characteristics; a generation distinguishes from others by a specific way of speaking. Linguistic analysis, therefore, can also be adopted to describe and explain the problems of communication between different generations.

Abstract

This review article focuses on the relationship between language and language use on one hand and the concept of generation on the other. It argues that linguistic concepts and methods can be very useful for a deeper understanding of differences between generations, the process of constitution of generations and the creation of generation identities. Generations are seen as the product of communication and of discoursive activities. Among the distinctive features of generations there are many linguistic characteristics; a generation distinguishes from others by a specific way of speaking. Linguistic analysis, therefore, can also be adopted to describe and explain the problems of communication between different generations.
