The Odyssey is one of the most widely used classical texts in cinema. The cinematic rewritings often have modified strongly the original structure and the literary features of the homeric poem in relation to the poetics of the directors and to the taste of the audience. Franco Piavoli in his movie Nostos uses the Odyssey to develop one of the most important themes of his whole film production: the complex relationship between man and nature. Piavoli tells the story of ‘his’ Odysseus using the expressive power of images and cinematic language. The great Italian director also works extensively on the ‘soundscape’ and music, with particular regard to the sound of the human voices. So, he creates for his characters an artificial language mixing of ancient Greek, Latin, Russian, English and other Mediterranean languages.
