Moving from the Stoic concept of oikeiosis argued by Seneca in his Ep 121, a comparison with Spinoza’s Ethics is proposed. The analysis starts from Eth II, pr. 13 cor. and continues until Eth, pr. 39 schol. The purpose is to argue for the possibility of finding a conceptual structure similar to the Stoic idea of oikeiosis in Spinoza’s text. This similarity is an element of a framework common to Stoicism and Spinozism, namely the attribution of ethical significance to what Seneca calls «the place of man in nature», and one of its main expressions is the recognition, in ethics, of the first and immediate awareness of one’s own constitution, associated with self-love, which belongs to every living entity.

Abstract
Moving from the Stoic concept of oikeiosis argued by Seneca in his Ep 121, a comparison with Spinoza’s Ethics is proposed. The analysis starts from Eth II, pr. 13 cor. and continues until Eth, pr. 39 schol. The purpose is to argue for the possibility of finding a conceptual structure similar to the Stoic idea of oikeiosis in Spinoza’s text. This similarity is an element of a framework common to Stoicism and Spinozism, namely the attribution of ethical significance to what Seneca calls «the place of man in nature», and one of its main expressions is the recognition, in ethics, of the first and immediate awareness of one’s own constitution, associated with self-love, which belongs to every living entity.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
