Il pensiero sulla scena. Plot e rappresentazione del pensiero nel Filottete di Sofocle

Attraverso la lettura del Filottete di Sofocle il saggio analizza il ruolo della rappresentazione della mente dei personaggi per la comprensione di un testo teatrale. Come per ogni testo narrativo in senso lato, anche il destinatario di un dramma deve, per comprendere il plot, cogliere il reticolo di pensieri che si nasconde dietro l’azione visibile dei personaggi, e prospettarsi i diversi scenari che le loro intenzioni e le loro scelte possono produrre. Il Filottete mostra come il legame tra mente e azione scenica sia pervasivo e vada ben oltre i punti specifici nei quali più scopertamente i personaggi rendono manifesto il loro pensiero attraverso la parola. La presenza di una profezia, che – per i vincoli imposti dal fato all’azione e quindi al pensiero e alle scelte dei personaggi – rivela che la storia avviene in un mondo impossibile e aporetico, amplifica i problemi connessi alla dimensione del pensiero, ma rende nel contempo più evidenti i meccanismi della rappresentazione del pensiero sulla scena. Through a reading of Sophocles’ Philoctetes, the paper focuses on the role of the representation of the characters’ mind for the understanding of a dramatic text. In order to process the plot, the addressee of a drama, as well as that of any other narrative text in the broadest sense, must grasp the network of the characters’ thoughts lying behind their visible action, and predict the different scenarios originated by their intentions and choices. Sophocles’ Philoctetes shows how permeating the link between action and mind on stage is, and how it extends well beyond those specific points in which characters more openly make their thoughts plain through their words. As the presence of a prophecy unveils that – due to the constraints imposed by fate on the characters’ action and consequently on their thoughts and choices – the plot unfolds within an impossible and aporetic world, it amplifies and at the same time makes clearer the general mechanisms connected to thought representation on the scene.
