Founded by therans settlers in 631 B.C., Cyrene immediately knows an important urbanistic development with the construction of city walls, public and private buildings and sanctuaries. The excavations recently made by the Italian Archaeological Mission of the University of Urbino interested the Agorà quarter, the Hellenistic Gymnasium, the Acropolis, the sanctuaries of Dioscures, Demetra and Apollo Apotropaios. These studies confirmed and specified the part of Cyrene in the archaic trade and the wealth of the city between the end of the VIIth and the beginning of the VIth century BC.
