The work of Claudio Cesa (1928-2014) is one of the most notable examples of philosophical historiography in Italy during the second half of the twentieth century. Through the examination of his favorite authors - Hegelian Left, German Idealism, Croce and Gentile with their pupils – the recently deceased scholar obtained remarkable results going much far beyond these specific topics. His exploration of new tracks, joined with his loyalty to the national tradition of the discipline, his critical revision of consolidated interpretative schemes, joined with his refusal of any particularistic specialism, his textualism, joined with his closed attention to the different intellectual contexts of philosophical literature, drive the reader to understand what historico-philosophical research should be if it must not succumb to cultural trends or to those perspective deformations rising from the personal allegiance of the interpreters to more or less successful currents of thought.
