The relation focuses on the trilingual edition of Anacreon songs published by the Neapolitan publisher and printer Domenico Parrino in 1712 (Anacreontis et Sapphonis Carmina, Graece, Latiine, Italiceque conversa. Notas et animadversiones addidit Tanaquilus Faber, quibus multa veterum emendatur), whose Latin translations are the work of Henry Etienne and André Elie. The editorial and social framework will be presented within which the trilingual collection of translated songs is placed, which is dedicated to the noble Francesco Maria Spinelli (while a first edition by the same publisher and printer, which appeared in 1700, was dedicated to another notable Francesco Pignatelli), and some reflections will be also made on the function of gift giving humanistic translations of Greek classics (readership and circulation). Besides, the investigation will focus specifically on individual translations. In particular, the versions Stephanus gives of some songs considered today as authentically Anacreontic will be examined in detail, both under the literary-critical and metric profile (witnessing translators at work).
