Abstract

Natural Pastures as Part of the Sardinian Rural Landscape. In Sardinia, one the factors that bave in/luenced rural landscape is pasture management. Even zf this a major activity in animai husbandry, its productive and economie importance has been decreasing in comparison to that o/ other stronger and more competitive sectors. Natural pasture has multiple /unctions such as economica!, productive, enviromnental, landscape and ecologica! ones. Howeve1; such roles are achieved only i/ pasture is managed properly. Since this ecosystem is in dynamic equilibrium, wrong management can lead to its degradation in terms o/ reduction o/ soil /ertzlity, reduction o/ /loral composition or, even worse, deserti/ica tion. On the contrary, the abandonment o/ natural pasture areas causes a progressive evolutz'on process towards woody fòrmatz'ons. Such changes in natural pasture scenarios are related to a reducti'on zii animai production and environmental conservation, as well damaging the beautiful and unique Sardinian landscape. The present work is /ocused on the valorisation and optimisation o/ Sardinian natural pastures and takes into account development and multi/unctional utilisation o/ the rural tenitory. In o,der to achieve that, a method is proposed /or the characterisation o/ natural pasture sur/aces, with the creati on o/ pastora! maps as a way o/ supporting the deterrnination o/ corree! managerial choices, the zdentification o/ dif/erent landscape types, and the de/inition o/ severa! economie and productive dynamics o/ the rural territory. In this research, the evolution o/ environment dynamics is studied by cartographic analysis and /ocuses on the variations o/ some characteristic and fandamental elements o/ the rural landscape. Materiai which is already available ( orthophotos) is associated with the digitai photogrammetry technique and uses a multisensorial photogrammetric station which allows to quickly manage aerz'al and satellite photos, digitai elevation model (DTM), corrected orthophotos, and stereoscopie models o/ the ground. This new method has the advantage o/ integrating during the phases o/ analysis and synthesis traditional and computerised instruments without neglecting representatz'on aspects o/ the territory.
