The paper analyzes the relations within Sophocles’ Oedipus Coloneus between fatal, ab ovo predetermined elements, revealed by oracles, and those introduced by a curse from a certain moment on. It also shows which narrative strategies Sophocles uses to keep the potential conflicts existing between these elements and the free choices of the characters under control.
