The article aims at showing that the issue of “presence” in the philosophy of religion essentially refers to the problem of the presence of God in the world. Firstly, I claim that such a problem can be adequately addressed only by rejecting a dialectical view of God’s presence/absence in the world. Secondly, I consider the issue of the presence of God from the epistemological point of view, in particular by assuming religious experience as a condition of possibility for the certainty concerning the presence of God. Finally, I take into consideration the presence of God from the ontological point of view, by referring to the doctrine of the omnipresence of God sustained by classical theism and showing its plausibility with respect to “non-interventionist” or panentheistic conceptions that are widespread in the contemporary philosophy of religion.
