After an overview of recent interdisciplinary studies on the life and death of real children, this paper examines how the infancy of male children was perceived. Significant examples of the Latin religious literature (Augustine and Isidore of Seville) and of secular vernacular literature (Aldobrandino da Siena and Zucchero Bencivenni) are explored. What teachings governed the life of those who had just come into the world?
